Luminetx and Buckman have been selected 2009 Global Business Award recipients by the Greater Memphis Chamber International Business Council.

Luminetx, a bioscience technology company, and Buckman, manufacturer of specialty chemicals, will be recognized at the council’s annual fall meeting from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Hilton Memphis, 939 Ridge Lake Blvd.

The meeting, Memphis: The Crossroads of NAFTA, will feature diplomats from Canada and Mexico and customs, trade and economic development officials.

NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement of 1994, removed many barriers to trade and investment among the United States, Mexico and Canada.

“Memphis is uniquely situated between two of our nation’s largest trade partners, Canada and Mexico,” said Charles Blatteis, International Business Council chairman. “With our community’s transportation, distribution and logistical assets, we are positioned for tremendous growth and trade opportunities. This meeting will forge stronger relationships between Memphis and our NAFTA partners.”

Stephen Brereton, recently appointed Canadian Consul General in Atlanta, will be keynote speaker for the awards luncheon.

“The Global Business Awards are designed to recognize companies based in our community that excel in international business, as well as being outstanding community leaders” said Mike Demster, Greater Memphis Chamber vice president, international and technology business development. “Both Buckman and Luminetx exemplify the criteria for the awards through their growth and global sustainability and their strong values and ethical conduct in dealing with their employees and global partners.”

Session speakers will include Andres Chao Ebergenyi, Consul General of Mexico in Little Rock; Cletus Coughlin, vice president and deputy director of research, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis; Vivian Collins, supervisory import specialist, U.S. Customs and Border Protection; James Golsen, corporate partnership program, U.S. Commercial Service; Robby Beau, FedEx; and Charles Gulotta, executive director and Maggie Conway, deputy administrator, of the Memphis and Shelby County Office of Planning and Development.
